These days, almost everyone has access to a camera, whether that be on your phone or just a simple digital camera you have laying around the house. This easy access makes photography an excellent choice for a hobby. The art of photography is one of the most simply to get started in, and it has an infinite amount of possibilities! Compiled below are some of my favorite photography tips to transform your photos from mere keepsakes to works of art!
Composition: The Rule of Thirds
The Rule of Thirds is a general composition rule that states that the subject of your composition should never be directly in the center, it should be off to one side at approximately the one third mark. This helps make your photos much more visually dynamic and interesting. Check out the example below to see what I mean.

Don’t Rely on Zooming In
You may see the zoom feature on your cell phone and immediately use that to get a close up shot of your baking project, but that’s actually not the best way to get that perfect zoom without losing photo quality. Even though cameras are becoming more and more advanced, the best way to ensure your zoom photo turns out great is to simply get closer! Check out this photo of a baguette I took on my phone by getting super close, you can really see the details without losing any quality!

Nature Knows Best
Although it may be tempting to just take photos indoors where you can control the lighting with the flip of a switch, natural lighting is truly the best way to go. Light from the sun often creates different tones in photos than artificial lighting, and if you aren’t good enough in Photoshop to make them look the same, you’re better off just planning your photography sessions for when the sun is out! Below, I’ve attached an example of each type of lighting, so you can see for yourself how drastic the difference it!

Practice
Just like other art forms, the best way to improve your photography is simply to practice. Try taking photos of things in your daily life that are arranged in an interesting fashion or take some photos of some greenery in your backyard. In general: keep taking photos, and keep having fun with it!
