How to Fold an Origami Rose

Origami Rose

Want to learn how to fold an origami rose? You’re in the right place! With only a square piece of paper and some time and patience, you too can learn to fold this fun and intricate paper creation. Just follow the next 8 easy steps, and if you get confused at any point, feel free to refer to the video at the bottom of this article, which walks through the whole process.

Step 1

Starting with a square piece of paper, first fold it in half. Then, fold it in half again.

Step 2

Open the last fold you just made. Take the bottom edge and fold upward so that it meets halfway between the middle fold and the new bottom edge. Unfold completely and repeat the last 2 steps to the other side.

Step 3

Completely unfold everything. Your paper should look like the image below on the left. This next step is the trickiest, so be careful and watch the video at the bottom of this article if you need more help figuring it out. Ultimately, each center fold is going to fold over to the left, forcing the middle to flatten out into a rotated square.

Step 4

Flip the whole thing over to the other side. On this side, you’ll be connecting the vertical fold indicated with the white line and pushing it up to meet the horizontal fold indicated with the other white line. On the underside, reinforce the crease to keep this formation in place. Repeat for the other 3 sides, and don’t worry if they come undone as you go around.

Step 5

Simultaneously begin to wrap each side into a cylindrical shape by meeting each edge to the next. Flip the cylinder over to reinforce all of the folds underneath that the paper stays in this shape.

Step 6

To form the bottom petals of the rose, fold each of the flaps up halfway (see pictures below). Repeat for the other 3 sides.

Step 7

Begin tucking in each flap into the next. The last flap will be a little tight to tuck in, but once all of the flaps are tucked into one another, your rose should almost begin to come alive!

Step 8

To finish off the rose and mimic the look of a real rose, curl out each of the petals. When all of them have curled out, you will end up with a finished origami rose!
