How to Make a No-Sew Face Mask

by Grace Yang

Age Recommendation: Any!

Length of Activity: 5-10min

Supplies Needed: a square of fabric (approx. 20” by 20”, the size of a bandana), and 2 rubber bands (or hair ties)

Due to recommendations by the CDC for the general population to wear basic face masks when they enter public settings, the mYe BEAT Team figured we would create an easy step by step guide to create a basic face mask. While we don’t think that this fabric mask will absolutely keep you safe from contracting COVID-19, it’s a simple option that is still better than nothing. By creating your own face mask you can free up ready-made ones for the healthcare workers and other essential workers!

Step 1: Fold your Fabric

Fold the fabric down the middle length-wise (otherwise known as hotdog style)

Step 2: Fold your Fabric (Again)

Fold the fabric in the same way you just did to create a long skinny rectangle

Step 3: Slide on your Rubber Bands

Slide the two rubber bands on to each side, turning your long skinny rectangle into something that looks more like a piece of candy

Step 4: Fold the Excess Fabric

Take the fabric on the outside of the rubber bands and fold them towards the middle

Step 5: Wear it!

Use the rubber bands as ear loops and try on your mask!
