Tips and Tricks to Keeping Food Fresher

by Jasmine Wu & Ann Zhang

Due to social distancing, the frequency at which people go out to shop for groceries has decreased for most. Thus, it is important to store foods so that they will stay fresh longer. Below are some tips and tricks on how to keep some food longer.

Fresh Fruit

A little bit of Vitamin C to power you through your day

Frozen. Most fruit can be stored longer simply by freezing them. Although this process will change the texture of the fruit in most cases, it is still just as delicious, especially frozen bananas. Aside from that, you can also use frozen fruits to make the perfect smoothie, especially if you have frozen berries.

Berries

Can’t wait until berries are in season!

Wash in Vinegar. This might be strange, but washing berries in an vinegar can help stop there ripening process, allowing for you to keep your berries fresh for longer.

Bananas

Yum!

Be Choosy. Bananas have the potential to keep for a pretty long time. Just make sure to pick the ones that are still green when shopping at the grocery store. When you want to eat a banana, put one in a brown bag overnight to ripen it. This way, you can still enjoy a ripe banana while the rest are able to keep for a longer time.

Cling wrap. Another way to keep bananas fresher for longer is to wrap them in cling wrap. Simple, easy, and hassle free.

Potatoes and Sweet Potatoes

I’m already dreaming of french fries

Don’t Refrigerate. Store potatoes and sweet potatoes in a dry and cool place. Preferably out in the open. Avoid placing them in plastic bags as potatoes and sweet potatoes in areas of good ventilation tend to keep longer. In general, sweet potatoes will not last as long as potatoes because of their high sugar content.

Milk

Store in ice cube trays. Freeze your milk in ice cube trays. In doing so, it will be conveniently portioned out while keeping for longer. When you want to add in milk to your tea or coffee, just pop a milk cube in and enjoy. Especially when the tea or coffee is freshly brewed and piping hot. These milk cubes can help reduce the temperature, making the drink ready to enjoy.

General Rule

One bad apple ruins the whole bunch. An analogy really, not just for apples. If you find anything with mold on it, immediately throw it out, as it will cause the other food around it to have a higher chance of going bad, because mold travels in spores in the air. Thus, one thing being moldy will make others more susceptible to becoming moldy too.
