Optical Illusions

by Eric Zeng

Ever since we were little we have been shown various different optical illusions. Ever time baffling the mind with its tricks. In this week’s article, we want to show some of these illusions and explain what is happening.

Our first illusion is a great way to show how our brains work. When staring at the spinning circle, our brain is trying to adjust to make it understandable. However, when your brain gets used to the movement it gets translated to the surroundings for a short amount of time. With this trick the starry night starts to distort until your brain readjusts to your surroundings.

This optical illusion is a classic one. All these circles have repeating patterns and if you stare too long, they look like they’re moving. This works because your brain is constantly trying to adjust and autofix what you are looking at. Due to this movement, the circles look like they are moving.

This Optical illusion is fascinating and mind boggling. At first glance, the lines seem like they are curved, wrapped, and distorted. However, all these lines are in fact straight. The artist cleverly uses the mismatched tiling to distort the image. However, the reason why it is perceived as warped is because the brain sees the white squares to be bigger than the black ones.

This optical illusion uses the background to trick the observer’s vision. What this image shows is that the white tile that is affected by the shadow of the cylinder makes it the same color as the grey tile outside of the shadow. Due to our brain’s expectations, we expect a different or darker color. However, this simple trick shows that both are in fact the same color.
