Durian is a fruit that possesses controversial perspectives from many people. Spiky on the outside while having a custard-like yellow fruit on the inside. The fruit is accompanied by an odor that many describe as foul.

Despite comments from many regarding the foul odor of the fruit, the fruit is considered a delicacy by many stemming from its unique taste profile that may be described as mostly sweet and custard-like.

Setting flavor aside, durian has many health benefits. One of which includes providing a bombarding list of nutrients that few other fruits can provide. The list includes Calories, 357; Fat, 13 grams; Carbs, 66 grams; Fiber, 9 grams; Protein, 4 grams; Vitamin C, 80% of the Daily Value (DV); Thiamine, 61% of the DV; Manganese, 39% of the DV; Vitamin B6, 38% of the DV; Potassium, 30% of the DV; Riboflavin, 29% of the DV; Copper, 25% of the DV; Folate, 22% of the DV; Magnesium, 18% of the DV; and Niacin, 13% of the DV. This impressive list of nutrients proves that Durian has the potential for many health benefits. Some major health benefits of durian are reducing cancer risk, preventing heart disease, fighting infection, and lowering blood sugar. 

 

Moving back to the fruit’s purpose as a food item, durian is frequently eaten in various methods such as eating it fresh, pairing it with other dishes, or utilizing it in processed foods.

As mentioned previously, the odor of durian is quite controversial and the opinion of its smell is highly subjective. Some people favor the smell while others despise it. In some countries, the odor of durian is controversial to the point where it has become banned in many hotels and public transport systems.

All in all, one’s opinion towards durian is subjective and thoughts regarding the fruit can vastly vary between different individuals. If eaten in certain ways, it has the potential to provide many health benefits. However, the odor of the fruit is a major factor for many. Some enjoy the odor while some despise the odor.

 

Ultimately, durian is a unique and healthy fruit that has many health benefits while possessing odors that may potentially be viewed as an undesirable side effect by portions of individuals.
