Instagram is a popular social media app that is used by over two billion users all around the world. But have you ever wondered about when it started and when it began to become so popular?
The idea of Instagram started off with a Stanford graduate, Systrom, who started off working at Google. He started off creating the app,”Burbn” Inspired by other social media platforms, the app also had post check-ins as well as photos. Systrom wanted to do something more with his app so he recruited another Stanford graduate, Krieger, who has worked on the social platform Meebo. They then decided to rework the concept of focusing on photographs on mobile devices, and they renamed the app to Instagram. Below is what instagram looked like in 2010
Systrom and Krieger focus their app on images, comments and the liking features. The duo decided to make a web version for an IOS app that will take advantage of the improved photographic capabilities on the iPhone 4. They finalized the app, and the app got released on App store on October 6, 2010.
The app reached twenty five thousand users on the first day, and in under three months, the app reached one million users. The app was a massive success. As the app grew rapidly, the company had a lot of interest from various users and potential buyers. Eighteen months later, the app was bought for one billion dollars in cash and stock by Facebook.
